564 Optical Tooling Scales

Optical tooling scales provide you with tremendous targeting flexibility. These easy-to-read, white-face scales allow precise dimensional measurements accurate to 0.001 of an inch. The targeting system (described below) is uniquely designed to accommodate all instrument focal lengths from zero to approximately 75 feet. When coupled with the array of Brunson scale accessories, virtually any alignment point or surface can be referenced quickly and accurately.

Optical tooling scales are comprised of a series of paired-line targets, repeating at precise 0.100 of an inch intervals. The optical micrometer on an instrument then divides these intervals into 100 parts, producing a measurement resolution of 0.001 of an inch.

Four distinct sets of paired-line targets, each with its own spacing, are located every 0.100 of an inch on the scale. Target spacings of 0.005, 0.010, 0.025, and 0.050 of an inch provide accurate reading at various instrument focal lengths.

At close range (2 feet, 6 inches), the scale pattern more than fills the field of vision. The filar/bi-filar reticle pattern makes it possible to accurately position a single line between the 0.005 of an inch paired lines. At 10 feet, the 0.010 of an inch spaced lines are used; at 50 feet, the .050 of an inch spaced lines are used. As viewing distances increase, the progressively larger target spacings are used.

Scales are numbered for easy reading, regardless of focal length.  The largest numerals indicate where each inch begins.

For extremely close shots, the smallest numerals designate the whole inch interval in which you are measuring.  Finally, each inch is divided into 10 equal segments; only the even increments are labeled.

562 Magnetic Scale Holder (pictured)
Replaced by 562A Magnetic Scale Holder

This permanent magnet with approximately 15 pounds of pull will hold a scale firmly against any ferrous material, regardless of surface orientation. The model 562A has accurately ground edges at 90 degrees to assure the scale is perpendicular to the surface. The popular model 562 original scaleholder was redesigned as the model 562A to hold either Cubic Precision or older-style Brunson Instrument scales, which had different thicknesses.  Use the model 562A with all optical tooling scales 20 inches and shorter.
Approximate Weight: Holder; 1 pound; shipping, 2 pounds.
562-41 Magnetic Scale Holder

The model 562-41 is a bigger, stronger magnet for use with the model 564-40 optical tooling scale. Note: This holder may not be shipped by air.
Approximate Weight: Holder; 4 pound; shipping, 5 pounds.
563 Scale Level

Two bull's-eye levels are mounted at right angles to one another and establish either a level or vertical attitude of the scale. The model 563 conveniently clamps to the scale with a thumbscrew lock.
Approximate Weight: Level; 1 pound; shipping, 1 pounds.
803 Invar Scale Extension Kit

This kit is designed to precisely extend the range of standard optical tooling scales for accurate measurement of larger dimensions and to access previously unreachable points. The invar tubing has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion which effectively eliminates changes in length due to handling or other thermal changes. This is particularly beneficial when measuring a system in its "hot" or running state.

Individual components are machined to standard lengths with very low tolerances. In addition, each kit is hand-picked to minimize error stack-up. The flat end of each invar tube allows measuring to the tangents of shafts, and a ball contact point offers the best repeatability on most machine surfaces. A special concave tip is included for use with tooling ball applications (optional with metric kit).

803 Kit Specifications

Individual components are traceable to N. I. S. T. Kits are assembled to hold the total stack-up error to ±0.001 of an inch (±0.025 mm for metric kit). The invar tubes are one inch (25.4 mm) in diameter with corrosion-resistant stainless steel ends.

  • Thermal Expansion Coefficient:
    0.68×10-6 in./(in. °F) for temperature range of 77°F to 200°F
Metric Kit:1.22×10-6m/(m °K) for temperature range of 25°C to 93°C
  • Length Tolerance:
803 Standard Kit: ±0.0003 of an inch per component
803-C Calibration Kit: ±0.0001 of an inch per component
